On 7th November, 1988 in Grain Entomology Laboratory, Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Dr. Anand Prakash organized the first meeting along with other 3 Founder Members viz., Drs. (Mrs.) Jagadiswari Rao, S. P. Gupta and K. S. Behera and proposed to establish Applied Zoologists Research Association (AZRA) at Cuttack. Later, bye-laws of the proposed Association were formulated, discussed and memorandum for the registration of AZRA was discussed and approved by 21 members presented in the second meeting on 16 February, 1989, which is considered as its Foundation Day.
AZRA was registered under the Registrar of the Societies on 5 February, 1990 and assigned Regn. No. 19126/64 (1989-90). During 1990 Drs. D. Satpathy, A. K. Tripathy, Dinesh Pd. Gupta, Suresh Pd. Gupta and S. K. Srivastava joined as Founder Members. First issue of the Journal of Applied Zoological Researches (Vol. 1, No.1) as a functional organ of the Association was published in June, 1990. Later, Dr. B.V. David, President of AZRA, Prof. B. Senapati, Vice President of AZRA, Dr. R. W. Alexander Jesudasan, Foreign Secretary joined the Association.
Many active members viz., Drs./Prof. D.S. Jayas (Canada), Mohd Arif (DARL, Haldwani), S.S. Misra (Lucknow), D.K. Garg (New Delhi), P. Nagaraja Rao (Hyderabad), Bharath Lakshmi (Visakhapatnam) & many others shouldered the responsibilities to bring up the Association in the present form. Presently, AZRA is recognized in India and abroad and its activities are being financed time to time by Government organizations viz., ICAR, New Delhi; CSIR, New Delhi; DBT, Govt. of India; Defense Agricultural Research Organization (DRDO), New Delhi; Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of Orissa etc.

Objectives
1. To promote research and development in the field of applied zoology including animal pests in agriculture, horticulture, forests, fisheries science, veterinary, dairy, biomedical sciences and other allied fields.
2. To provide a forum for exchange of information and experiences to the amateur and professional applied zoologists and to encourage them by awarding or honouring for the significant research contributions in their respective fields of research
3. To arrange national and international conferences/ seminars/ symposia on different aspects of applied zoology.
4. To publish a research journal viz., “Journal of Applied Zoological Researches” and other journals, literature, books and Technical Bulletins in the field of applied zoology and also in agriculture.
5. To undertake activities against deterioration of environment affecting animal life including human health and also to emphasize the judicious use of natural resources for conservation of animal life.
6. To provide scholarships for higher studies to financially poor but meritorious students of zoology/entomology at post-graduate and doctoral levels.
7. To implement feasible applied zoological research technology in the rural sector through skilled training and teaching to farm-women, housewives, school drop-outs and landless farmers to uplift their economic status.
